ChatGPT Now Sells Products Directly — With Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout: users can buy products without leaving ChatGPT. Powered by Stripe, live on Etsy, rolling out to 1M+ Shopify merchants. Here’s what it means for your store.

ChatGPT Now Sells Products Directly — With Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy

On September 29, 2025, OpenAI made one of the most consequential moves in e-commerce history: they turned ChatGPT into a store. Not a search engine that links to stores. Not a recommendation engine that sends you elsewhere. An actual store where you browse, choose, and buy — without ever leaving the conversation.

The feature is called Instant Checkout. It’s powered by a new open standard called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed with Stripe. And it’s already live.

What Happened

U.S. ChatGPT users (Plus, Pro, and Free) can now purchase products directly from Etsy sellers inside a ChatGPT conversation. Over one million Shopify merchants — including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori — are coming next.

Here’s how it works: a user asks something like “best running shoes under $100” or “gifts for a ceramics lover.” ChatGPT shows relevant products, ranked purely on relevance — no sponsored placements, no ads. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user taps “Buy,” confirms shipping and payment, and the order is placed. All without opening a browser tab.

Orders, payments, and fulfillment are handled entirely by the merchant. ChatGPT acts as the user’s agent — a digital personal shopper that passes information securely between buyer and seller.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol

Under the hood, Instant Checkout runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) — an open standard that defines how AI agents and businesses work together to complete purchases.

OpenAI built it with Stripe and leading merchant partners. The key design principles:

  • Works across platforms — Not locked to one payment processor or e-commerce platform
  • Easy to integrate — Merchants using Stripe can enable it in as little as one line of code
  • Merchant stays in control — The merchant is the merchant of record. They handle fulfillment, returns, and customer support exactly as they do today
  • Open-sourced — The protocol is publicly available so any AI agent or merchant can adopt it

When a user places an order, ChatGPT sends details to the merchant’s backend via ACP. The merchant accepts or declines, processes payment through their existing provider, and handles the rest. If you’re already on Stripe, activation is almost instant. If you use another payment processor, Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API lets you participate without switching.

What the Partners Are Saying

Stripe: “We’re proud to power Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and co-develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help businesses and AI platforms build the future of commerce.” — Will Gaybrick, President, Technology and Business

Shopify and Etsy are launch partners, meaning their merchants get first access to the 700+ million weekly ChatGPT users who are already asking shopping questions.

Why This Changes Everything for Merchants

Let’s be blunt about what this means:

ChatGPT is no longer just a research tool. It’s a sales channel.

700 million people use ChatGPT every week. Many of them are already asking product questions. Until now, ChatGPT could only recommend and link out. Now it can close the sale. That’s a fundamentally different business model — and a fundamentally different opportunity for merchants who are ready.

Your competitors are already in it

Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, Vuori, and all of Etsy are in. Over a million Shopify stores are rolling in. If you’re not there, your customers are buying from someone who is.

Product discovery is now conversational

Users don’t browse categories. They say “I need a birthday gift for my mom who likes gardening, under $50.” ChatGPT interprets that, searches across merchants, and recommends products. The winners are merchants whose product data is rich enough for ChatGPT to match confidently.

Organic ranking means data quality wins

OpenAI was explicit: product results are organic and unsponsored. Instant Checkout doesn’t boost your ranking. When multiple merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT considers availability, price, quality signals, and whether the merchant is the primary seller. You can’t buy your way to the top. You have to earn it with better data.

The Problem: Most Stores Aren’t Ready

Here’s where it gets uncomfortable. For ChatGPT to recommend your products, it needs to find them, understand them, and trust them. That requires:

  • Complete product structured data — Name, description, price, availability, images, brand, ratings, GTINs
  • Clean Schema.org markup — JSON-LD Product schema on every product page so ChatGPT’s crawlers can extract attributes
  • Product identifiers (GTINs) — Without a GTIN, ChatGPT can’t match your product to a user’s query with confidence
  • Star ratings and reviews — ChatGPT uses these to rank competing products. No ratings = no trust signal
  • AI crawler access — If your robots.txt blocks ChatGPT-User, you’re invisible

We’ve audited hundreds of stores at AgentCart. The average AI readiness score is 47 out of 100. Most stores are missing GTINs, have incomplete product descriptions, lack rating markup, or block AI crawlers entirely. These stores won’t appear in ChatGPT’s shopping results — period.

It’s Not Just ChatGPT

Instant Checkout is the headline, but the shift is bigger than one platform. In the last six months:

  • Google launched “Buy for Me” in AI Mode, powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — co-developed with Shopify
  • Perplexity expanded “Buy with Pro” shopping to all users, with in-app checkout via PayPal
  • Microsoft Copilot is surfacing products with purchase capabilities
  • Visa launched Trusted Agent Protocol to verify AI agent transactions
  • Mastercard rolled out Agent Pay to all US cardholders

Every major AI platform is racing to become a shopping channel. The merchants who are ready for one are ready for all of them — because the underlying requirements are the same: clean structured data, product identifiers, rich descriptions, and AI crawler access.

Where AgentCart Fits In

This is exactly what we built AgentCart for. We audit your store across every AI shopping protocol:

  • ChatGPT Shopping (ACP) — Can ChatGPT find your products? Are your titles, descriptions, prices, GTINs, and ratings complete enough to appear in Instant Checkout results?
  • Google UCP — Do you have the manifest Google’s AI agents need to discover and transact with your store?
  • Schema.org — Is your structured data complete, accurate, and machine-readable for Perplexity, Bing Copilot, and other AI surfaces?
  • Agent Accessibility — Can AI crawlers actually reach your product pages, or are they blocked by robots.txt?

In 30 seconds, you get a readiness score and a field-by-field breakdown of what’s missing. Our AI Agent Preview shows you exactly what ChatGPT sees when it looks at your products — every field marked green (found) or red (missing). No guesswork.

And with our Benchmark feature, you can see how AI agents actually talk about your brand versus competitors. Do they recommend you? Do they even mention you? You’ll know in minutes.

What You Should Do Right Now

  1. Run an AgentCart auditGet your free AI readiness score and see exactly what’s missing
  2. Fix your product data — Add GTINs, complete your descriptions, ensure prices and availability are in your structured data
  3. Unblock AI crawlers — Check robots.txt for ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot
  4. Add star ratings to your markup — If reviews exist on your pages but not in your JSON-LD, AI agents can’t see them
  5. If you’re on Shopify — You’re about to be eligible for Instant Checkout. Make sure your product data is ready before it rolls out
  6. Apply for Instant Checkout — OpenAI’s merchant application is open. But your store needs to pass their data quality requirements first

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT just became the world’s largest personal shopping assistant — with a buy button. 700 million weekly users. Organic, unsponsored product rankings. Direct checkout without leaving the conversation.

The merchants with the best product data will win. The rest will watch their competitors get recommended instead.

The question isn’t whether AI agents will sell your products. It’s whether they’ll sell yours or your competitors’.
